To find this point, slide your fingers laterally until you land in a divot or depression, about an inch or two away from the midline, depending on the size of your skull. Once you find the point, grasp your skull with your hands, and use your thumbs to press upwards firmly. Hold this pressure point for one minute while practicing deep breathing.

Pressure Point #2 - Gall Bladder 21 (GB21)

The second acupressure point that we will discuss is Gall Bladder 21 or GB21. This pressure point is located midway between the base of the neck and the shoulder, generally the highest point on the upper trapezius muscle. When you apply pressure on this spot, it will feel extra tender. To apply pressure on this point, use both hands to press on these points simultaneously. Hold this pressure point for one minute while practicing deep breathing.

Pressure Point #3 - Governing Vessel 16 (GV16)

The third acupressure point that we will discuss is Governing Vessel 16 or GV16. This pressure point is located on the base of the skull in the midline in the hollow as you come down from the skull. You may also trace the spine of your neck upwards before you reach the base of the skull and find the hollow there as well. To apply pressure on this point, use your middle finger and apply pressure while tilting your head back to use the weight of your head for more pressure.

Deep Breathing Techniques

When applying acupressure to these points, it is important to hold the pressure for one minute and practice deep breathing simultaneously. Deep breathing helps you relax and enhances the effect of the acupressure. It is also important to apply sustained pressure on each point for about one minute, rather than applying quick and shallow pressure. If you use your hands and they get fatigued, shake it out, rest, and apply pressure again.


Incorporating these three acupressure points into your daily routine can help you relieve your neck pain and stiffness naturally. You can perform this routine 2-3 times per day or more often if you feel your neck and shoulders stiffening up.
